What does it mean on Trainline when it says not available to buy?

It’s nearly my date of travel! Why are train tickets not available to buy? – As we’ve mentioned above, sometimes rail operators might not be able to confirm timetables until shortly before the date of travel. Yes, that could mean just a couple of days! However, there is another reason why train tickets might not be available to buy.

During COVID-19, many rail operators altered the way that their reservation data was shown online, so that it would automatically give you a seat reservation where possible. This encouraged social distancing and ensured that train tickets stopped being sold when all of the allocated reservations were filled.

After this, it would show as ‘sold out’. However, with the exception of the Caledonian Sleeper train, there’s no need to have a reservation to board a train. You might prefer to have one, but you don’t need one! These ‘compulsory reservation’ markers have hung around though, meaning that trains will still stop being selectable when all of the seats are filled.

This doesn’t mean that the train is ‘sold out’, but you might need to pick a different train that isn’t full in order to buy your ticket.
Don’t worry, if you’re buying a flexible ticket, you’re not tied to any particular train, so long as it meets any date or time restrictions.

If you do want to go that way have a go with Trainsplit, that should be able to work you out the best split fare for it, and if there’s no through fare they don’t charge a fee, either, as there’s nothing to calculate it from.

I have a follow up query: I ended up going to the station and buying an ‘anytime day return’ ticket Raynes Park to Haslemere. This states ‘not valid via London terminals’. Am I correct in thinking this can be used via Clapham Junction as that’s not a London terminal? (Notwithstanding the NRE website stating ‘no fare available’-see my earlier post)? It could be used via CLJ if that was a Permitted Route, but it seems it isn’t.

thanks, looks like I can’t then. Seems odd though that by the quickest journey is not a ‘permitted route’ (even though it’s all on the same train operator) There are quite a few routes where the fastest journey is not a permitted route.

The present structure is inherited from BR and was designed before the internet and journey planners were in everyday use. There is therefore no inbuilt capabiity to generate fares based on any specific journey; instead, the systems have to try and find a valid fare that fits with the journey plan; and if it can’t it will say that no fares through fares are available.
