What has happened to bbc1?
Switch from SD to HD on satellite The BBC is replacing its standard definition (SD) broadcasts on satellite with high definition (HD) versions. When this is happening?
The BBC has now closed all its regional BBC One SD channels, and replaced them with a UK-wide version of BBC One in SD. At the same time, the BBC has launched the HD version of your local BBC One channel which you can find on channel 101. Starting in 2024, the BBC will end all SD broadcasts on satellite.
This switch only affects people using an SD-only satellite set-top box. If you’re still using an SD-only box, you will have lost your local programming in January-February 2023. In early 2024, you will lose all your BBC channels. How to tell if you’re using an SD-only box Go to channel 799 on your TV (Freesat customers only).
If you see a “Good news!” message, then you don’t need to do anything. You’re ready and won’t be affected. Your new HD BBC One region has already launched and you can find it on channel 101. If you see a “sorry, your satellite set-top box is not capable of receiving high definition services” message, these changes will affect you and you will need to upgrade your satellite box.

The BBC and Freesat have launched this help scheme website to support people with SD-only satellite boxes to move to a high-definition (HD) device. We’re providing information to everyone on what’s happening and the options available. And for those who are eligible, we’re providing extra support. 
What is the HD Satellite Upgrade? In 2023, the BBC will be switching off the SD satellite feed on all their channels. What this means is, viewers with older set top boxes, which are not HD enabled, will no longer be able to view BBC channels once the switch off has taken place.
- Customers affected by the SD Satellite switch off are Freesat and Sky customers, who have SD enabled devices only.
- How can I check if I am affected? An easy way to check if you’re affected is by going to channel 799 on your set top box.
- A message will display to advise whether your device is HD enabled or not.
If your box is not HD enabled, you will be affected and will need to change your device if you wish to continue watching BBC services. If you cannot see a message on channel 799, this may indicate you are not a Freesat or Freeview customer. We would advise to contact your TV provider directly if you are unsure as to whether you have a HD enabled box.

Why is there no BBC One +1?
BBC One +1 – On 8 October 2013, the BBC announced plans to launch a one-hour time shift of the channel, named BBC One +1. The channel would have replaced BBC Three in 2016. However, on 30 June 2015, the BBC Trust rejected the plans for a BBC One +1 channel as they stated that it would be at the expense of commercial rivals.

BBC Three is a British free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by the BBC, It was first launched on 9 February 2003 with programmes targeting 16 to 34-year-olds, covering all genres including animation, comedy, current affairs, and drama series.
The television channel closed down in 2016 and was replaced by an online-only BBC Three streaming channel, After six years of being online, BBC Three returned to linear television on 1 February 2022. It broadcasts every day from 19:00 to around 04:00, timesharing with CBBC (which starts at 07:00). BBC Three is the BBC’s youth-orientated television channel, its remit to provide “innovative programming” to a target audience of viewers between 16 and 34 years old, leveraging technology as well as new talent.
Unlike its commercial rivals, 90% of BBC Three’s output originated from the United Kingdom. Notable exceptions were Family Guy and American Dad (both of them originating in the United States ). It and sister channel BBC Four also carry occasional BBC Sport programming as an overflow for the BBC’s other channels.
- Following budget cuts at the BBC, the first iteration of BBC Three ceased operations on 16 February 2016, despite public opposition, moving to a BBC Three-branded streaming channel on the iPlayer,

What are the changes to the BBC in 2023?
Image source, Getty Images The BBC is to broadcast 1,000 fewer hours of new TV programmes this year as part of a drive to save money. The broadcaster made about 12,500 “originated hours” in 2022. Half of the 1,000-hour cut will come from sport, with fewer major events in 2023.

- The BBC must find £400m in annual savings by 2027/28, according to the corporation’s latest annual plan, which was published on Thursday.
- It said the current freeze of the price of a TV licence “continues to place significant financial challenges on the BBC at a time of high inflation and media super-inflation”.
Initiatives to save money include “an annual reduction of 1,000 hours in content commissions across our portfolio”. This year, 50% of that reduction will come from “fluctuations” in the sporting calendar, with no Commonwealth Games or men’s football World Cup, as there was in 2022.
- There is a women’s World Cup this summer, but UK broadcast details have not been confirmed.
- The other 500 hours will come from different areas including BBC Four, which the corporation announced a year ago would become “the home of both the BBC’s rich archive and arts & music performances”.

The 1,000-hour figure does not include news. The BBC’s TV budget will decline by £96m to £1.75bn over the coming year, Deadline reported, The corporation said it was currently “spending more on, and commissioning more hours of, UK-originated TV content than any other organisation”.
Other cost-cutting measures include moving a number of World Service TV and radio broadcast services online, and merging the domestic and global news channels. The corporation has recently come under fire for plans to close the BBC Singers choir and cut staff from its orchestras, as well as for local radio stations in England to merge more shows.
The annual plan said the broadcaster’s first priority would be impartiality, with a pledge to “launch an independent review of our social media guidance”. The BBC has also recently been caught up in rows about chairman Richard Sharp’s links to former prime minister Boris Johnson, and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker’s Twitter criticism of the government’s asylum policy.

What will this mean for viewers? The decision has been brought in recently and so Brits will have to wait and see how they unfold.
BBC Breakfast has appeared to scrap their regional news bulletins completely in the morning. Changes to the evening bulletins at 6.30pm might also be cancelled if staffing shortages continue. It will likely mean that in some areas Brits could find their evening news bulletins being replaced by one of their neighbouring regions.
Many regional television schedules will be disrupted, and some won’t be aired at all until September. This will disappoint many Britons as the news of these cancellations comes just as BBC Breakfast returns to TV screens. The programme went off-air for two weeks to free up space for coverage of the Olympics in Tokyo.
Why has BBC News gone black?
Fact Check-BBC.com banner was not switched ‘from red to black’ amid reports of Queen Elizabeth’s health By Claims that the BBC changed the banner of its website’s landing page from red to black “in anticipation of the death” of Queen Elizabeth II on Sept.8 are false.
Archived versions of the website confirm the banner for BBC.com was already black. Britain’s royal family rushed to be with Elizabeth on Thursday after doctors said they were concerned for her health and recommended she remain under medical supervision (). Queen Elizabeth’s death was later announced by Buckingham Palace that evening.
Before the monarch’s death was announced, one Twitter user claimed: “BBC has changed its website banner from red to black as the entire UK Royal Family goes to Queen Elizabeth’s bedside. Looks like the inevitable news is being prepared #QueenElizabeth” ().
Other examples of the claim can be found () () ( But these claims that the BBC.com banner changed colour are false. Archived versions of the page, seen in August and in 2020, show the black banner is a normal feature of the website. The claim appears to confuse the landing page of BBC.com with that of BBC News (bbc.com/news) which, at the time of writing, still displayed a red banner ().
