Vivo says it alerts customers to the fact that face recognition can be used to unlock phones by people or objects that look similar to the consumer. Nokia and Samsung, meanwhile, says that their affected models come with other security options, such as fingerprint recognition. Which? is calling on manufacturers to improve the security of their biometric systems against this sort of spoofing, and make the risk clearer to users.

As MacRumors reported last week, Apple Stores and authorized service providers would soon be receiving parts of the TrueDepth Camera system, including the front-facing camera and Face ID. In a new memo seen by MacRumors today, Apple said it has begun to send out those parts to authorized service providers and Apple Stores, allowing for Face ID repairs without whole-unit replacement.
Repair prices will vary depending on the service provider, location, and device. The new repair option is available only for the iPhone XS and later. The iPhone X, which marked the birth of Face ID, is not supported. Apple said that the new repair option is not available in Argentina, Barbados, Bermuda, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad, and Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The other main consideration in swapping screens is that you will need to copy the screen data over from the old screen to the new one in order to keep the True Tone function working. There are several programmers on the market that will do the trick such as the Qian Li iCopy device.
- Finally, Apple has been making parts replacement harder by tying parts to the logic board using a proprietary encryption algorithm that can’t be copied.
- The result is unless you use the Apple self repair program and buy the screen from them, you’ll get a warning that pops up for the first week or so warning you that the screen might not be genuine – even if it is a genuine Apple screen.
Outside of the Apple repair program, the only way to get rid of that warning is to desolder a chip from the old screen and move it to the new one. That’s a repair that’s beyond the capability of most of us home DIY-ers, as it requires somewhat specialized equipment and expertise.

Sometimes you might not want certain pictures shot on your iPhone or iPad to take pride of place in your Photo Library, but for whatever reason, you don’t want to just outright delete them. That’s why Apple has always included a Hidden album in the Photos app, 
In previous versions of iOS, the problem was that the Hidden album remained in full view in the Albums section of the Photos app, or else you could hide it in the Photos app and it would still show up in the image picker of third-party apps, making it not completely invisible. 
This ensures that the photos that you’ve deleted or those that you’ve marked as hidden are automatically protected. Someone who has access to your unlocked phone will not be able to open these albums without further authentication. Notably, there is no option not to lock these two albums, as it is a system level lock that cannot be overwritten.

The MOST common problems with Face ID not working are problems with the Flood illuminator on the top side, i.e. the screen. The most common cause of Face ID not working is: FLOOD ILLUMINATOR PROBLEMS
- Water damage to the flood illuminator, Even just a single drop of water from a Clorox wipe, or a drop of sweat from your morning run can work its way through the ear speaker mesh on the front of the phone, and cause corrosion under the flood illuminator
- Torn front flex. For iPhone and iPads alike, if the thin black flex that connects the flood illuminator to the logic board is accidentally torn during a screen replacement, then the flood illuminator won’t be able to turn on the porch light of the Face ID system.
When Face ID is not working because of a FLOOD ILLUMINATOR problem, you will see a notification that says “Unable to activate Face ID” If you try to turn on Face ID from within settings, you will get an error “Face ID not available, try again later.” This problem can almost always be solved! As long as the flood illuminator itself is not damaged, the tiny laser can be desoldered from its native flex, cleaned, and resoldered on a known good flex from another phone.

The IR cam and the Front/Selfie camera are both unique and cryptographically tied to your device. While these parts can easily be replaced by anyone, your phone REQUIRES involvement of the Apple-controlled GSX system to pair your phone with any replacement part in order to retain Face ID function.
- If you find that your front camera is not functional (try to take a selfie) then that’s the end of the line for Face ID.
- DOT PROJECTOR PROBLEMS The good news is that the most common “bottom side” Face ID problem is a failure of the DOT PROJECTOR.
- The dot projector component is the small glass-like square adjacent to the TrueDepth cameras.
This component has an internal fuse that is quick to ‘self destruct’ This can happen through water exposure, or even by simply touching it. (Don’t touch the dot projector!) When the dot projector fails, this can be determined by connecting a QianLi dot projector reader.
- If the dot projector is bad, then the reader will report that.
- The procedure to replace the dot projector requires specialty equipment–the dot projector must be removed, altered, and soldered to a new custom receiver QianLi dot flex, then a read/write operation to transfer the serial number and finally a delicate epoxy operation to glue the prism in place.
After that, Face ID will be restored in all but a handful of severe cases that have damage to the Front/Selfie or IR camera. Using Face ID is still secure, but it requires more consistency in how you look at iPhone. Face ID also has an accessibility feature you can use if you’re blind or have low vision. If you don’t want Face ID to require that you look at iPhone with your eyes open, go to Settings > General > Accessibility, then turn off Require Attention for Face ID.
