Why is Prime drink so popular?

YouTubers Logan Paul and KSI released their drinks brand, Prime Hydration, in January 2022. One year on, Paul said the drink had generated US$250 million (£209 million) in retail sales worldwide, with US$45 million of that in January 2023 alone. In the UK, there have been purchase waves across the country, with stores constantly selling out of restocks.

  • The popularity and shortage of Prime led to buying restrictions set by supermarkets, with some people reselling the drink – originally priced at £24.99 for 12 bottles – for over £1,000,
  • So why has Prime become so popular? Certainly, it could be explained in part by the popularity of its founders, two of the most famous YouTube personalities in the world.

Between them, Paul and KSI have over 39 million subscribers on their main YouTube channels. As a researcher in social media with a specific focus on YouTubers, I would argue that the drink’s popularity is down to the pair’s audience engagement. But their savvy use of YouTube’s algorithmic networks, in which videos with similar content are linked together by YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, has also been key.

Is Prime drink healthy?

What if I just enjoy the taste of Prime drink but don’t use it for exercise? – The flavour of Prime drinks themselves have generally been described as quite pleasant and enjoyable, making it often more favourable than plain water, especially when exercising.

But if you wanted to consume Prime as an alternative drink to a soft drink for example, it comes down to how often you are having it. Be aware that Prime drinks contain a source of artificial sweeteners, which have been linked to some negative health consequences, especially when consumed frequently.

Keep in mind that Prime energy contains a high dose of caffeine, which may not be suitable for those sensitive to caffeine.

However, it too states that it is not suitable for children under the age of 15, or pregnant or breastfeeding women. “The marketing of energy drinks (and Prime energy) is highly attractive to young people,” Dr Trapp said.

“Energy drink advertisements promise consumers improved energy, performance and concentration, thus young consumers may falsely believe that more is better and consumer multiple servings – putting them at even greater health risk.” It is not suitable for children under 15 because it contains high levels of Vitamin A & Zinc which can be damaging if too much is consumed.

It also uses certain artificial sweeteners which are known to cause nausea, vomiting & diarrhoea in some people.

Is Prime actually making money?

New York CNN — For being less than two years old, Prime energy and sport drinks are already enduring a major growth spurt. Prime launched in January 2022 and is a joint creation between influencers (and former boxing rivals ) Logan Paul from the US and Olajide “KSI” Olatunji, who is from the United Kingdom.

They have amassed tens of millions of followers on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok and capitalized on their influence to create a line of drinks that have become an instant success and disrupted the energy drink category. The duo’s first drink, Hydration, is a Gatorade-like sports drink that mixes coconut water and electrolytes, without sugar or caffeine.

The drink differentiated itself from its older rivals with a lineup of punchy flavors, which include ice pop, lemonade and “Meta Moon,” a combination of blue raspberry, bubblegum and cotton candy. Prime is billed as a “better for you lifestyle beverage that people could enjoy on any occasion.” It also hoped to eschew the “sports drink” label despite being one, since the brand says Paul and KSI “have fans who are students, doctors, teachers, athletes and everything in between.” The drinks quickly sold out following their launch.

  1. Pandemonium, like long lines and fans furiously grabbing for the drink, forced grocery store chain Aldi in the UK to limit purchases to one bottle per person at one point.
  2. The hype surrounding the drink also carried over to the US, where it has garnered a strong following with school-aged kids.
  3. A year later, Prime expanded its lineup to launch an ultra-caffeinated (and controversial) version called Energy.

A 12-ounce can contains 200 milligrams of caffeine, which contains six times more caffeine than a can of Coca-Cola. A 12-pack costs $29.99 and is sold at several retailers including Walmart, CVS and Target. Five flavors were introduced, including tropical punch, orange mango and strawberry watermelon.

We launched Prime with one product line exactly one year ago and we’ve already grown to surpass some of the biggest players in the industry,” Paul said in a press release announcing Energy’s launch. “It’s been surreal to see our growth and now that we’re taking on the energy space, I’m excited to see where we can go.” But this week Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the US Food and Drug Administration should investigate the high caffeine content in the canned energy drink as well as its marketing efforts.

Schumer alleged that Prime Energy “has an eye-popping level of caffeine, and that’s giving parents and doctors the jitters for the kids that are targets” and said that another issue is that “most parents haven’t even heard of this stuff that their kids are begging for.” “Prime is born from the reels of social media and the enigmatic world of influencers,” Schumer said.

“Kids see it on their phones as they scroll, and then they actually have a need for it.” In response, Prime said that its energy drink contains a “comparable amount of caffeine to other top selling energy drinks, all falling within the legal limit of the countries it’s sold in.” Prime Energy has “complied with all FDA guidelines before hitting the market and states clearly on packaging, as well as in marketing materials, that it is an energy drink and is not made for anyone under the age of 18,” the company said.

“As a brand, our top priority is consumer safety, so we welcome discussions with the FDA or any other organization regarding suggested industry changes they feel are necessary in order to protect consumers.” Both Paul’s and KSI’s followers on social media skew young.

  • On Instagram, 61% of Paul’s followers are 24 years old or younger (KSI’s is 63%) and on TikTok nearly 80% of Paul’s followers are 24 years old or younger, according to Fohr, an influencer marketing tech company.
  • Prime’s account on Instagram for the same age bracket accounts for 66% of its following.
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no caffeinated sports drinks or other products for children under the age of 12, while adolescents between the ages of age 12 and 18 should limit their intake to less than 100 milligrams per day.

The FDA says 400 milligrams of caffeine a day for healthy adults is “not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects.” The agency didn’t respond to CNN’s question if they will formally examine the drink. If it does advance to a Senate hearing, it wouldn’t be the first time.

  1. In 2013, a Senate panel held a similar hearing with top energy drinks.
  2. The leading energy drink companies at the time — Rockstar, Monster and Red Bull — all appeared before the Senate about a decade ago and were warned to be careful about their youth marketing pitches, but they weren’t anywhere near as tied to an early teenage cohort as Prime,” Jeffrey Klineman, editor-in-chief of BevNet, told CNN.

“It will be interesting to see how the Prime crew alters their pitch, or the branding on the energy drink to move it away from potential confusion with the sports drink, if there’s a hearing,” he said. Paul said that Prime Hydration made $250 million in retail sales in its first year.

  • In addition to promoting it on their social media, Hydration has inked deals with major league sports, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, mixed martial arts organization UFC and, most recently, FC Barcelona soccer teams, to become their official energy drink.
  • Sports drinks are a much smaller market than soda, but the category is “growing at a faster rate,” said Duane Stanford, editor and publisher of Beverage Digest.

For the first quarter of 2023, Prime Hydration has captured 5.8% dollar share of sports drinks, according to data from Beverage Digest. Although that’s far behind Pepsi-owned Gatorade (43.8%), Coca Cola-owned BodyArmor (14.4%) and Powerade (7.6%), Prime’s growth comes at the expense of those brands, with Gatorade and BodyArmor falling during that period, while Prime climbed.

  1. And there’s plenty of room for Prime to grow: Euromonitor forecasts that the $13 billion sports drink market in the US will grow to nearly $17 billion by 2027.
  2. Meanwhile, Prime Energy has raked in around $42.5 million this year, according to Circana data given to BevNet.
  3. Lineman said it faces tougher competition compared to its sports drink because there’s a lot of “thriving brands” including Celsius, C4 and Ghost, which “are all larger by orders of magnitude and are growing quickly.” Considering Paul’s appeal and social media, it’s not a surprise that both of the drinks blew up so quickly, Klineman said.

“Prime brings a youthful buying cohort that hasn’t had a lot pitched their way beyond traditional kid’s drinks. Paul is way more appealing to a 13-year-old than a juice box.” CNN’s Samantha Beech and Maria Sole Campinoti contributed to this report.

Can 12 year olds drink Prime Hydration?

Caffeine in Prime Energy Drink – The caffeine content is the biggest concern to me about Prime Energy. Unlike a typical sports drink that is designed to replace electrolytes lost in sweat and prevent dehydration, Prime Energy has a caffeine content of more than two and a half cans of Red Bull.

Can 10 year olds drink Prime?

Bottom Line: – Don’t buy into the influencer hype. For older kids, Prime Hydration can be safe once in a while, however it does pose a risk of vitamin toxicity if consumed in excess. Prime Energy drink is much too high in caffeine and should be avoided by children under the age of 18 years old.

Who owns Prime?

What is Prime? – The energy drink is one of three products sold by Prime, a brand owned by Louisville-based Congo Brands and promoted by YouTubers Logan Paul and Olajide Olayinka Williams Olatunji, who goes by KSI. Prime bills itself as a purveyor of sports hydration, filling “the void where great taste meets function” and helping one “refresh, replenish, and refuel.” Two of its products are geared towards post-workout recovery, offering Gatorade-esque servings of electrolytes and vitamins. But in terms of the brand’s online marketing — much of which takes the form of social media posts — there’s not much visual distinction between Prime’s recovery drink and its energy drinks. Both come in brightly colored packaging, with summery flavors like “Ice Pop” and “Tropical Punch.” Both products are available in the U.K., Canada, Australia and the U.S., retailing for around $2.50 per bottle — but that’s if you can find them.

Both formulations contain 20 calories, no added sugars, and are made with 10% coconut water. They also contain 250 mg of (branched-chain amino acids),, and some antioxidants. Prime hydration drinks are fairly expensive, typically costing over $2.00 or £2.00 per bottle or $2.00 per hydration stick. One of the main reasons that Prime hydration drinks are so popular is because they contain way less sugar than Gatorade and have far fewer calories as a result.

But are Prime sports drinks good for you? What are the ingredients in Prime hydration? Let’s take a closer look. The first ingredient in Prime is filtered water. This is certainly a good hydrating ingredient and critical for any healthy and effective sports beverage for athletes.

  1. In addition to filtered water, the liquid portion of Prime is composed of 10% coconut water.
  2. Coconut water is thought to be an excellent hydrating beverage since it contains natural electrolytes like potassium and is low in sugar.
  3. Prime hydration drinks also contain BCAAs and electrolytes, both of which can be helpful during exercise, along with some vitamins.
  4. BCAAs, which are three specific essential amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine), have a unique chemical structure and to be the amino acids most directly involved in muscle protein synthesis, with research indicating that BCAAs help maintain muscle mass.
  5. However, there are also unhealthy ingredients in Prime sports drinks, including citric acid, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium.

Citric acid can, Sucralose is an artificial sweetener shown to, and acesulfame potassium is another artificial sweetener found to cause adverse effects on the and,

  • Of course, taste is subjective, so whether or not Prime taste good depends on your preferences.
  • There are a variety of flavors to choose from, with mixed user reviews.
  • Although Prime sports drinks claim to have no added sugars, it’s really important to note that there are added artificial sweeteners, so the taste is surprisingly sweet, almost cloying.
  • In fact, because artificial sweeteners are so much sweeter than regular sugar, Prime sports drinks taste super sweet, much sweeter than Gatorade.

Many reviews describe the taste and texture as being thick and syrupy sweet, like a melted popsicle. The flavors tend to taste rather artificial, especially the Grape. Citrus and Ice Pop flavors seem to be the best received.

  1. There are several reasons why Gatorade is potentially bad for you.
  2. One of the chief issues with Gatorade is that it contains a lot of added sugar.
  3. Sweetened beverages are the in the typical American diet and can increase the risk of, and dysfunction.
  4. There are different Gatorade products available, but the traditional Gatorade Thirst Quencher sports drink contains about 150 calories, 36 grams of sugar, 306 mg of sodium, and 135 mg of potassium per.

The sugar is sucrose, which is table sugar. Sucrose is a disaccharide of, There are 4.2 grams of sugar per teaspoon, which means that there are about 8 teaspoons of sugar in a 20-ounce serving of regular Gatorade.

  • Consuming sweetened sports drinks, such as Gatorade, is associated with an increased risk of weight gain, obesity, tooth decay, and type 2 diabetes.
  • With that said, the sugar content of Gatorade isn’t necessarily unhealthy for athletes, and though Prime hydration drinks are thought to be healthier alternatives to Gatorade due to having less sugar, carbohydrates are required by the body during exercise to supply energy to the muscles, helping to prevent glycogen depletion during endurance workouts.
  • There is a lot of evidence to suggest that glucose and fructose, two simple sugars found in Gatorade and other common sports drinks,
  • Moreover, that sports drinks, such as Gatorade, that combine readily-absorbable sugars like fructose and glucose together are more easily absorbed during exercise than glucose-only solutions.
  • Additionally, though the sugar content of Gatorade seems high, the sports drink is specifically designed to be a 6% carbohydrate solution, as this isotonic concentration to optimize fluid absorption rates during exercise.

The other major problem with Gatorade is that it contains artificial food dyes, such as Red No.40, Blue No.1, and Yellow No.5, whereas Prime hydration drinks do not. These types of artificial dyes with increased hyperactivity in children and potentially increasing the risk of certain cancers, so their absence is certainly a health benefit of Prime hydration drinks vs. Gatorade.

  1. Ultimately, the fact that Gatorade (or another similar sports drink) is higher in sugar than Prime may or may not be a benefit or drawback for you, depending on, workout, and overall fueling strategy.
  2. If you aren’t working out at all, drinking plain water is better than Gatorade because you don’t need the extra sugar/calories, and your electrolyte levels should be fine as long as you are eating.
  3. The National Athletic Trainers’ Association states that plain water should be sufficient before, during, and after workouts lasting an hour or less, provided you have a, an average sweat rate, and didn’t have an extremely intense workout.
  4. For longer endurance workouts, your body does need carbohydrates during your workout, but depending on your fueling strategy, this doesn’t necessarily have to be attained via a sports drink.

A is to aim to replace 30-60 grams of carbohydrate per hour for workouts lasting from 1-2.5 hours and 60-70 grams per hour (but up to 90 grams per hour) for endurance exercise lasting longer than 2.5 hours. Why Is Prime So Expensive In these cases, drinking sports drinks like Gatorade can be beneficial. However, as long as you’re hydrating enough with water, can also come from real food fueling options instead of sports drinks. Examples include bananas, oranges, dried dates or figs, energy bars, applesauce squeeze packets, maple syrup, dried pineapple chunks, raisins of yogurt-covered raisins, fig newtons, and bites of peanut butter sandwiches.

  • Prime sports drinks can be better than Gatorade when you want electrolytes but don’t need added sugars.
  • This could be in cases where you are doing a shorter workout or are fueling with actual food.
  • You’ll also spare your body from unhealthy artificial colors by choosing Prime sports drinks vs.
  • Gatorade, but keep in mind that Prime hydration drinks do contain artificial sweeteners and other additives, which are definitely not good for you.

Therefore, you might be better off, which will be free and clear from artificial colors, preservatives, sweeteners, and flavorings. You can to the exact amount of sugar you need based on your activity level—whether you choose a traditional sports drink formulation with 6% carbohydrates or a sugar-free sports drink like Prime is up to you. Who created Prime?

Logan Paul’s Prime Energy Drink Under Scrutiny Over High Caffeine Content Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader, has asked the F.D.A. to investigate a popular beverage created by the YouTube influencers Logan Paul and KSI over its high caffeine content. Carlos Osorio/Associated Press The release of Prime, a drink brand founded by the YouTube personality and boxer Logan Paul, had British teenagers lining up for hours outside grocery stores on its release date in December.

Some supermarkets were even forced to limit purchases to, Now, Prime is facing a backlash from physicians and lawmakers who say that the high levels of caffeine in one of its drinks can be harmful to children. At a news conference in New York on Sunday, Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader, called for the Food and Drug Administration to investigate the ultra-caffeinated variety of Prime, which he pointed out has caffeine levels equivalent to about six 12-ounce cans of Coca-Cola.

Prime offers two kinds of beverages: Prime Hydration, a sports drink that does not contain caffeine, and Prime Energy, a highly caffeinated drink. A 12-ounce Prime Energy contains 200 milligrams of caffeine, compared with the 114 milligrams of caffeine in a 12-ounce can of Red Bull or the 100 milligrams found in a cup of coffee.

Pediatricians recommend that children under the age of 12 avoid caffeine entirely, and those from 12 to 18 should consume no more than 100 milligrams per day. Senator Schumer said Prime Energy had “so much caffeine in it that it puts Red Bull to shame.” He added that Prime differed from other highly caffeinated energy drinks in that its advertising campaign appeared to target those under 18.

Mr. Paul, a high-profile provocateur known for his, has long faced questions over the example he sets for young people. He has won two Teen Choice awards, decided mainly by voters ages 13 to 19, and when he is pursued by his loyal fans, known as the Logang, they often skew young.

He launched Prime in 2022 with Olajide Olayinka Williams Olatunji, a 30-year-old rapper and another prominent YouTube personality known by his online alias, KSI. In a letter to Dr. Robert Califf, head of the F.D.A., on Monday, Senator Schumer urged the agency to investigate the beverage company. “Many physicians have serious concern for Prime, and I write to specifically urge your agency to investigate Prime for its claims, marketing and caffeine content,” Senator Schumer wrote.

Prime said in a statement to The New York Times that each can of its energy drink “states clearly” that it was not made for anyone under the age of 18. The company added that the beverage had caffeine levels comparable to other top-selling energy drinks and that Prime was compliant with F.D.A.

Guidelines. The official backlash comes as America’s major beverage companies vie for a piece of the, Over the past five years, sales in the energy drink industry have surged from $12 billion to $19 billion, according to Circana, a market research firm. Recently, companies like Pepsi and Gatorade have both invested in new caffeine-addled beverage lines, and shares of Monster Energy, another caffeinated beverage, surged 30 percent in the past year.

Experts say the excitement has been fueled in part by a decades-long pivot away from sugary sodas. Senator Schumer said at the Sunday news conference that parents had brought Prime to his attention. But the energy drink is part of a growing field of high-caffeine drinks popular among young people on TikTok.

  1. These drinks include the brand Alani Nu, supported by the social media influencer Addison Rae, and Celsius, which is backed by Pepsi. Dr.
  2. Edith Bracho-Sanchez, a pediatrician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital who joined Senator Schumer at the news conference on Sunday, wrote in an email to The Times that regularly consuming as much caffeine as is found in Prime Energy can disrupt the sleep cycle, which is essential to a child’s developing brain.

High caffeine consumption can also give consumers the jitters and cause digestive issues, headaches, heart palpitations and even abnormal heart rhythms, she added. Mr. Paul rose to fame as a popular YouTube personality and has since ventured into other avenues such as acting and boxing.

  2. Paul did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
  3. A Prime representative said in a statement that it was “very important” to distinguish between the two drinks on the market, one of which — Prime Hydration — was also immensely popular among young consumers and did not contain any caffeine.

“We welcome discussions with the F.D.A.” on industry changes necessary to protect consumers, a Prime representative added. But Dr. Bracho-Sanchez said the manner in which the companies were marketing the two beverages — with flashy packaging and a social media blitz pushed to younger consumers — made it difficult to tell them apart.

  1. The “energy” branding was also misleading, she added.
  2. This is not true energy.

What age should you be to drink Prime?

What’s In PRIME Energy Drinks? – PRIME comes in the form of sports drinks, energy drinks, and drink mixes. It was released in the United Kingdom in 2022 and quickly banned in Australia and New Zealand, thanks to its eyebrow-raising nutrition profile. PRIME energy drinks contain 200mg of caffeine per 355ml can, the same amount of caffeine as two-and-a-half cans of Red Bull, three large coffees, or six cans of Coca-Cola.

  1. That’s a lot of caffeine to pump into an adult, let alone a kid.
  2. According to its website, PRIME states that energy drinks are not suitable for kids under 18, pregnant people, or breastfeeding people.
  3. But that doesn’t appear to stop the brand from targeting tweens and teens, particularly those who are easily influenced by macho advertising that flaunts ideas of “manliness.” The phrasing “energy drink” makes them sound like healthy options, especially for active kids.

But the truth is that caffeine is not healthy or safe for kids—even teenagers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), caffeine can lead to harmful side effects in kids under 18, including:

Dehydration (not enough water in your body)Heart complications (such as irregular heartbeat and heart failure)Anxiety (feeling nervous and jittery)Insomnia (unable to sleep)

What is the controversy with Prime Hydration?

Caffeinated version making headlines –

  1. Last week, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said it recalled cans from Ontario, Quebec and Alberta.
  2. Those cans had 200 milligrams of caffeine, which is 20 milligrams over Health Canada’s limit of 180 milligrams per drink.
  3. Prime said that those cans were an American version of the drink, and Paul said that Prime Energy is not yet distributed in Canada.
  4. Confusingly, another representative from Prime told CBC that there is a Canadian version of the drink with 140 milligrams of caffeine, which would meet Health Canda’s requirements.
  5. It isn’t clear whether that version is being sold in Canada yet.
  6. When asked about how the American version ended up in Canada, Prime said that it “complies with federal regulations.”
  7. The president of the Canadian Beverage Association (CBA) says they’re aware people might be importing the drink and avoiding Canada’s approval processes.

In other words, it’s possible that stores are shipping the drinks in from the U.S. without the company’s knowledge. Why Is Prime So Expensive Prime said that its energy drinks are not intended for those under 18. (Image credit: Jeff Chiu/The Associated Press) Even so, the 200-milligram version is also causing a stir across the border, where it’s within the legal caffeine limit. On July 11, Chuck Schumer, majority leader of the United States Senate, called on the U.S.

Who really owns Prime Hydration?

How Congo Brands works – Why Is Prime So Expensive ZikG/Shutterstock Steiger and Clemons are the co-owners of Congo Brands, which in turn owns Prime Hydration LLC, the official corporate name for the Paul- and KSI-affiliated energy drink company. Congo Brands’ website also hints at the fact that Prime Hydration was originally created by Steiger and Clemons, rather than Paul and KSI.

  • Its FAQ section notes that Congo exists “to create synergies between the independent brands co-founded over the years” — and Prime is one of those brands.
  • Congo Brands’ website is otherwise fairly light on details although it does note that the various companies under the Congo Brands umbrella “may have ownership beyond Trey and Max.” In the case of Prime, it seems like the truth about the ownership lies somewhere in the middle: Paul and KSI have an ownership stake, but they appear to act more like brand representatives or partners than the real engine behind the drinks, at least when it comes to manufacturing and creating the recipes.

Yet they’re undoubtedly a huge marketing engine. Prime’s popularity appears to be pretty much entirely due to the YouTubers’ affiliation with it, so while they may not own the majority of Prime, they’re still playing a major role.

How is Prime so sweet?

What Are the Ingredients in Prime Energy and Prime Hydration Drinks? – The base of both Prime drinks is filtered water and coconut water. They are sweetened with sucralose, and have electrolytes, B vitamins, and branch-chain amino acids. Only the energy drink has caffeine.

  1. In addition to their caffeine, CR’s Keating has other concerns about the ingredients in these drinks.
  2. For example, both drinks contain more than 100 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamins B6 and B12.
  3. While B vitamins do support energy production—they help your body turn the carbohydrates, fats, and protein in the foods you eat into energy—you don’t need mega doses to get that effect.

And most people get enough B vitamins from food, says Carl at the American Academy of Pediatrics. The daily values for nutrients are calculated for a 2,000-calorie diet, so some kids who eat less might need even less. While these vitamins may not pose immediate harm, combining these drinks with other fortified foods and vitamins can result in unnecessarily high intakes, Keating says.

  • Prime drinks contain sucralose, an artificial sweetener, rather than table sugar or high fructose corn syrup.
  • But artificial sweeteners (sometimes called non-nutritive sweeteners, or NNS) may not be a safe alternative, especially for kids.
  • Earlier this year, the World Health Organization advised against using artificial sweeteners for weight control.

At the time, Francesco Branca, WHO director for nutrition and food safety, said in a statement: “NNS are not essential dietary factors and have no nutritional value. People should reduce the sweetness of the diet altogether, starting early in life, to improve their health.” Several studies have raised concerns about the effects of artificial sweeteners, and studies on these ingredients usually don’t include children.

The Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children do not consume any caffeine.

Can kids under 18 drink PRIME?

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is urging the Food and Drug Administration to investigate an energy drink from YouTube stars Logan Paul and KSI, which Schumer says has an “eye-popping” amount of caffeine and seems to target kids in its marketing on social media.

  1. The beverage, PRIME Energy, contains 200 milligrams of caffeine — the equivalent of more than two cups of coffee, roughly six Coca-Cola cans or 2.5 cans of Red Bull.
  2. Two-hundred milligrams is a lot for a child,” said Dr.
  3. Ran Goldman, a pediatrician and professor of pediatrics at the University of British Columbia.

Goldman and other pediatric nutrition experts said children should not consume any amount of caffeine. Even a little bit of caffeine can cause kids to develop anxiety, jitters, decreased appetite or increased heart rate or blood pressure, according to Chenin Nickel, an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition at the University of Nevada, Reno.

If kids drink too much, it is actually possible to overdose on caffeine,” Nickel said. “It is a stimulant that affects the central nervous system, so if kids overdose on caffeine, that can result in seizures, abnormal heart rhythms, coma and even death.” Paul and KSI launched the PRIME beverage brand last year.

Its first product, a sports drink called PRIME Hydration, does not contain caffeine. PRIME Energy, meanwhile, debuted in January and has roughly the same amount of caffeine as some other popular energy drinks, such as 5-hour Energy and Ghost, but significantly more than Monster or Red Bull.

“Kids see it on their phones or as they scroll, and they actually need it and the problem here is that this product has so much caffeine in it that it puts Red Bull to shame, but unlike Red Bull, this product has one true target market: children under the age of 18,” said Schumer, D-N.Y. The PRIME website and PRIME Energy label both warn that the drink is not recommended for children under age 18, people sensitive to caffeine, pregnant women or women who are nursing.

“As a brand, our top priority is consumer safety, so we welcome discussions with the FDA or any other organization regarding suggested industry changes they feel are necessary in order to protect consumers,” PRIME’s representatives said. They added that PRIME Energy “contains a comparable amount of caffeine to other top selling energy drinks, all falling within the legal limit of the countries it’s sold in.” In the U.S., many energy drinks are considered dietary supplements, which means companies can produce and sell without notifying the FDA.

As a result, the beverages are difficult to regulate, though the FDA can still restrict ingredients that pose a “significant or unreasonable risk of illness or injury” or require changes to a product’s label. For healthy adults, the FDA says it’s safe to consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day — the equivalent of about four or five cups of coffee.

Among children, however, the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages caffeine consumption because it can be addictive and potentially stunt brain development. Caffeinated energy drinks in particular “have no place in the diet of children and adolescents,” the academy has said, since they don’t provide a health benefit over water and may contain excessive sugar and calories.

  1. Goldman said he often treats young patients with sleep disturbances due to energy drink consumption.
  2. That can be especially dangerous for teens who are just starting to drive, he added, since it can decrease their reaction time.
  3. Energy drinks also run the risk of accelerating kids’ heart rates when mixed with ADHD medications, Goldman said.

He added that he sees adolescents in his emergency department who were influenced by social media to consume energy drinks. The beverages are easily accessible to kids, Goldman said, since they’re sold in grocery stores. “It’s becoming a trend,” he said.

They used to seek the new shirt or pants or shoes. Now it’s what drink is cool to drink.” Schumer expressed concern on Sunday that children may be drinking PRIME without their parents’ knowledge, calling it “one of the summer’s hottest status symbols for kids.” According to the National Institutes of Health, energy drinks are the most popular dietary supplement consumed by U.S.

teens and young adults next to multivitamins. Nearly one-third of teens between 12 and 17 years consume them regularly. A 2022 analysis of TikTok videos found that most videos featuring energy drinks portrayed the beverages favorably and had high levels of engagement. How much caffeine is in PRIME?

Is Prime Energy drink bad for you? – Each can of Prime Energy contains 200 milligrams of caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant drug that can improve physical performance and increase endurance, but caffeine consumption can also cause undesirable side effects including nausea, shakiness, anxiety, and heart palpitations.

  1. The human body’s ability to break down caffeine does vary among individuals, so some people may be more likely than others to develop these side effects.
  2. When caffeine is taken in overdose, life-threatening heart rhythm abnormalities, seizures, and severe electrolyte abnormalities can occur.
  3. In general, most adults can safely consume 400 milligrams of caffeine daily without experiencing dangerous side effects, but a safe dose of caffeine has not been established for children.

Caffeine consumption in children is linked to behavioral problems, mood disturbances, and poor sleep quality. Because of this, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children and teenagers avoid drinking energy drinks that contain caffeine or other stimulant drugs.
